The story behind The Basket
In 2020, we were living in Okinawa, Japan. Shopping at the San-A grocery store. Watching everyone around us carry their own baskets — imagine the ones you see at the grocery store, got it? Correct. And it made us think one thing:
Duh.
Not "how innovative." Not "how interesting." Just the obvious recognition that this was simply better. Better than bags. Better than totes. Better than the whole fumbling, flimsy system we'd accepted back home without ever questioning it.
We bought one that day. We haven't used a bag since.
The Basket was built by Max Bloom and WeiWei Wu — a husband and wife team, both U.S. Navy veterans, who spent years learning to solve hard problems in difficult conditions with whatever was in front of them. They set out to answer one question, what would the PERFECT SHOPPING BASKET look like?
Max served 14 years, reaching Chief Petty Officer before separating in 2017. WeiWei served nine years as an orthopedic surgeon. Together they bring a shared belief: when you see something broken, you don't wait for someone else to fix it. You figure it out.
That's not a philosophy they adopted. It's one they were trained to live.
The Basket isn't designed the way most consumer products are designed. It's designed the way gear is designed.
Every accessory clips into place. The phone holder is always where you want it. The cup holder is always where you want it. Because when you're moving fast — through a grocery store, a farmers market, a parking lot — you shouldn't have to think about where things are. You should just know.
At the same time, The Basket is yours. You set it up the way you want it. Accessories allow it to be infinitely customizable. The system is standardized. The configuration is personal. That tension between structure and flexibility — that's military thinking applied to everyday life.
Every feature of The Basket — every dimension, every clip point, every aesthetic decision — was made by Max and WeiWei together. Not divided by role. Not delegated. Built side by side, the same way they've approached everything since the day they met.
When the first prototype came off their small home 3D printer, they both knew immediately. Not because it was finished — it wasn't. It took dozens of iterations after that to get it right. But the first time you hold The Basket, you feel that it's right. The weight. The structure. The way things sit inside it.
That first prototype told them: keep going. So they did.
The bag won in America because it was free, disposable, and required nothing from you. Retailers handed them out by the billions and nobody stopped to ask if this was actually better.
It wasn't.
The basket — rigid, structured, personal — was always the superior tool. It protected your groceries. It organized your carry. It lasted a lifetime instead of a trip. The only reason it disappeared is because nobody bothered to build a modern version of it worth owning.
That's what The Basket is. Not a new product category. A correction.
If you've ever shown up at the grocery store and thought — there has to be a better way to do this — you were right. There is.
